During my frequent trips back to Saint Louis University, I often stop and check out all the information posted in the hallways. The Jesuit Hall Program recently caught my eye. As I studied the pictures I recalled many of my own memories as a Jesuit Hall Volunteer. As stated on Saint Louis University's News from Physical Therapy Jesuit Hall Volunteer Project, this program is both beneficial for the students and the retired religious community.
At Saint Louis University the residence for Jesuit priests and brothers is known as Jesuit Hall and the third and fourth floors are called the Fusz Pavilion. These floors provide skilled nursing care to retired Jesuits from the Missouri province of the Society of Jesus. Since 1997 our students volunteer to provide 1-2 hours per week of physical therapy services at Fusz under the supervision of the attending physical therapist, Tom DeBenedetti, P.T. Each student is assigned a patient.
This program allows the students to execute the skills they are currently learning under supervision. Also, the retired community not only appreciates the treatment they receive to improve their physical health, but also the conversation. Many friendships are build that last beyond the course of the students' education.
