The “NEW” Long-Term Care

  • So many of us think of Long-Term Care facilities and Nursing Homes as being sterile and depressing.  Over the past few years there has been a strong movement of change from the "old, cold, impersonal nursing home idea"  to a more "resident-centered- care' household model."

Now, homes look and feel  more 'homey' and patient care is tailored  around the patient rather than a strict schedule.  A recent article posted on Advance for Occupational Therapy Practitioners, gives a great perspective into the new world of Long-Term Care and the positive outcomes being seen.

"Osborn Pavilion staff gradually moved away from the medical model, letting residents design their own care protocols. If people want to sleep in or take a shower later in the day, the staff tries to accommodate those wishes. There's also a new dining program where residents have better meal selections, said Susan Brancato, RN, nurse manager.

"We're finding residents are eating better because they have a choice in what they eat and in how much they want," she said. "In the past, we had people saying they were so overwhelmed by the portions that they didn't want to eat at all."

This is a trend that RehabCare is a large part of.  Step into many RehabCare Nursing Homes and you will be pleasantly surprised.  Warm colors replace the stark white decor of the past, and emphasis is placed more on individual care.   Take a look at just one of our Long-Term Care facilities and see the world of the "NEW" Long-Term Care.
