In the Words of a Student….Holly
So much has happened since my last blog post. I just finished my third week of my third field work experience at Bellevue SNF in OKC, OK. Let me just say, I am having a blast! The staff and residents are great to work with. The days pass so quickly because I truly enjoy learning from all of the therapists and patients. My field work instructor graduated from the OUHSC, and has worked at the RehabCare facility since graduation. Prior to completing her masters in occupational therapy, she was a certified adaptive physical education teacher, which lead to her discovering OT. Her background in teaching has really prepared her to be an excellent clinical instructor. Each week I am gaining more independence in completing the initial evaluation and creating a plan of care for each individual patient. I feel I am gaining valuable hands-on experience each day, which mainly is gained in the clinic setting.
I will admit I was a little nervous about certain aspects of working in a skilled nursing facility, such as dealing with oxygen tanks, feeding tubes, IV tubes, etc. Within the first week I felt comfortable treating each patient and not having to worry about these aspects due to the training provided by my previous classes and hands on experience with my fieldwork instructor. I know the next 5 weeks will fly by quickly, but I hope to continue to grow as a future practitioner. Have a great week! Peace Love OT! Holly Houseworth
