Recently, there has been a lot of discussion over the rise in college tuition. For example, this week I read articles on three different states dealing with the issue. The state of Pennsylvania has approved a 4.5% hike in tuition, and Texas and South Carolina are currently in debates over substantial increases. As I am sure theses states are not alone, college students across the U.S. are being faced with growing debt as the fall semester commences. If you are pursuing your degree as a rehabilitation professional, RehabCare might be able to lend you a hand! Take a look at OpportunityU.
OpportunityU is our tuition assistance/reimbursement program which provides tuition relief to current students and recent graduates. If you are an OT, PT or SLP student, you may apply for up to $10,000 in tuition assistance/reimbursement. If you are an OTA or PTA student, may apply for up to $5,000 in tuition assistance/reimbursement. The best thing about the program is, not only do you receive help with your educational expenses, but you are assured a position with RehabCare upon graduation. Summer is just around the corner, and with that come thoughts of vacation, relaxing, and spending time with your friends and family. But also thoughts of long lines, spending, money, headache... However, stressing over tuition costs doesn't have to be one of those. RehabCare's tuition assistance/reimbursement program, Opportunity U, has continued to grow since its inception a few years ago. This program is open to all therapy students pursuing a Physical Therapist, Physical Therapist Assistant, Occupational Therapist, Occupational Therapy Assistant and Speech-Language Pathologist degree.
Previously we have written blogs about RehabCare's Opportunity U program. Tooting our own horn when mentioning the program is one thing, but we thought you might want to hear from a student who is currently enrolled in the program. So, here is what a May 2010 graduate has to say about her experience with RehabCare's Tuition Assistance program.
What convinced you to enroll in the Tuition Assistance Program with
RehabCare? "My department chair first told me about RehabCare as a
possible option I may want to pursue to assist in paying for my continued
education. I liked the option to receive assistance now, and the comfort in
knowing I would have a job waiting for me when I graduated."
Describe the communication/support RehabCare representatives provide to you
during your schooling. "I receive calls during the semester, and a
steady flow of emails, regarding my success in school and inquiries as to how
things are going. The Student Liaison always pleasantly offers assistance and
answers any questions I may have, as well as encourages me to call anytime.
Recently, a representative has been working with my clinic site to set up off
site placement for clinical experience with a RehabCare employee. What a great
opportunity!"
If you were speaking to another student about RehabCare's Tuition
Assistance program, what would you say? "I actually have done this
several times, and one has already signed on with RehabCare herself. I tell other
students of the benefits outlined on the website, the tuition assistance
program, and the availability of jobs around the country. At the very least, I
encourage them to call a representative, or fill out the information request on
the website. From my department, students are stressed enough by the level of
academia; adding a job search on top of that is very stressful. While I still
expect to interview with potential RehabCare sites, I have less stress knowing I
will receive a position."
Do you have any additional thoughts? "I have spoken with various RehabCare employees, and all seem very happy
with their choice in employer. Overall, I am thankful companies such as
RehabCare exist, and offer programs like the Tuition Assistance program.
Furthermore, I am very satisfied with the representatives I have had the
pleasure to work with, and my future opportunities with RehabCare."

Yesterday, representative Bruce Braley (D-IA) introduced what is known as the Frontline Providers Loan Repayment program. Under this new legislation Physical Therapists (among other health professionals) are encouraged to practice in underserved areas.
HR 2981, as the bill is known, asks the therapists to sign a commitment to practice in an area for at least two years in exchange for the student loan repayment. APTA President R. Scott Ward is noted as saying "With health care reform legislation on the horizon, it's imperative
that our leaders address workforce issues as a part of overall reform.
The Frontline Providers Loan Repayment Program would bring physical
therapists to areas in the country where their services are greatly
needed."
In times like these, you may be wondering how you're ever going to pay off all of your student loan debt. If you would like more information on the Frontline Providers Repayment program, check out this article on the APTA's website.

Just wanted to updated all our readers on a subject we previously
blogged on. Congress has revised The College Opportunity and Affordability Act, H.R. 4137, which allows
certain occupations to be eligible for federal loan repayment support. The revised bill now includes the Physical Therapy field and allows Physical Therapists to apply for student loan forgiveness. This is very exciting news for the many PT's who start their careers off swimming in student loan debt.
"Physical therapists (PTs) who choose to work with children, adolescents
or veterans would be eligible to apply for student loan forgiveness
under legislation approved Thursday, February 7, by the US House of
Representatives. Rep Joe Sestak's (D-PA) amendment to the College
Opportunity and Affordability Act of 2007 (HR 4137) authorizes the US
Secretary of Education to forgive a portion of qualifying student loan
debt to PTs practicing in areas of national need."
Now that the PT profession has successfully become included in the above mentioned bill, Occupational Therapists are now pushing for inclusion. The AOTA has quickly banded its members together and are taking action to get their profession incorporated into the final bill. Now they wait on the Senate's decision.
Imagine you had two job offers to choose from upon graduation. First off, congratulations on getting TWO offers. But, now you have to make a choice. How would you decide on which one to accept?
The first offer comes from a facility located in your preferred location and is definitely a setting you know you would enjoy working in. The second offer comes from a facility not located in your top three preferred locations and isn't really a setting you would like to work in. Seems like an easy choice, right? Not so fast.
